Kybella

KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine that is identical to the deoxycholic acid that is produced in the body. It is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, also known as “double chin.”
Deoxycholic acid produced in the body helps the body absorb fats. Kybella is a cytolytic drug, which when injected into tissue physically destroys the cell membrane. When properly injected into submental fat, the drug destroys fat cells; however, it can also destroy other types of cells, such as skin cells, if it is inadvertently injected into the skin.

Close to 80% of people are concerned with the fat collection under the chin. Up to now invasive procedure such as liposuction was the only option available. Kybella is much less invasive. You avoid all the negative issues involved with surgery, such as anesthesia and other risks associated with surgery and longer recovery time.

However, if there is loose skin in this area (“turkey neck”), Kybella can’t correct the problem. For correction of saggy skin, liposuction and/or neck lift might be better choices. Other options to consider are one of our non-surgical skin tightening treatments, such as Ultherapy or Exilis skin treatments.

It varies. Typically, a series of 12-20 injections is needed per visit. You may need two to three total visits, spaced about a month apart. Each treatment takes about 15 minutes.

Some people may get up to 50 injections in a single treatment, with up to six single treatments no less than a month apart. Majority of people notice results in two to four treatments.

Kybella destroys the fat cells; therefore once you have reached your aesthetic goal, there is no need for further treatment.
Majority of patients report minor bruising and swelling that can last up to few days. Most clients experience mild discomfort at the injection sites which is easily treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. Please note that results may vary from patient to patient.
Our goal is to provide our clients the most comfortable experience during and after their treatments. We do recommend and offer topical as well as anesthetic injections at the treatment site for pain relief.
You should not receive KYBELLA® if you have an infection in the treatment area or if you had prior surgery in the neck region.

The treatment is not indicated if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or breast-feeding. Other conditions including history of difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or if you are on blood thinners and have bleeding problems may cause serious complications.

KYBELLA® destroys fat cells; however, it can also destroy other types of cells, such as skin cells, or even nerve tissue. Kybella can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, and trouble swallowing. The most common side effects of Kybella include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Hardness in treatment area
  • Redness
More serious, however rare, side effects can include:
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Nerve injury causing weakening of facial muscles
Using Kybella for the treatment of fat outside of the submental area is not approved and is not recommended. Although it may be useful for very small collections of fat cells, such as lipomas (fatty collections under the skin) or eye bags, there may be considerable safety risks in these areas.
