Eyelash Transplant & Eyebrow Transplant Indications

Eyelashes & eyebrows make an important contribution to facial symmetry and presentation of a person’s appearance. A face without eyelashes or eyebrows may not look complete and the person may feel very self-conscious about his/her appearance. There are a number of reasons that a person could loose her/his eyelash and eyebrow hair:

  • Radiotherapy or chemotherapy for cancer treatment
  • Trichotillomania – which is an impulse control disorder characterized by a long term urge that results in the pulling out of one’s hair
  • Physical trauma/facial injury and scarring, resulting from a variety of causes such as: thermal and chemical burns, eyelid tattoos, road accidents, industrial accidents
  • Surgical scar resulting from removal of tumors or skin lesions
  • Accidental ripping or over-plucking
  • Aesthetic – as women desire the fuller eyelashes and eyebrows

During the consultation a detail medical history is taken including information about social history and balding history in the family. A careful examination is conducted. Your specific desires and concerns are discussed with Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour as well as the eyebrow shape, anesthesia type, possible risks and complications and the incision sites if any. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs, discontinuation of cigarette smoking and preoperative blood tests.

Many eyelash transplant patients have suffered from trichotillomania and it is imperative that they have been cured of the condition for at least two years before performing a procedure. The risk of relapse and ripping out the transplanted hair is greater prior to two years as trichotillomania can be a challenging condition to treat.

It is also important to make sure that the patient can close their eyes completely. Some trauma victims cannot close the full lid and this makes a transplant impossible because the new transplanted lashes could damage the eye.

This operation is generally performed on women who have damaged their eyelids by gluing on false eyelashes. The number of these women has been on the rise over the past few years. With these patients you need to be sure that there is a healthy upper eyelid where new eyelashes can be transplanted.

In most cases, hair is derived from the back of the head through individual surgical punches known as FUE (follicular unit extraction). The strip method is a general technique known as FUT (follicular unit transplant) where a small strip of scalp with the hair roots intact is excised and hair follicles are separated as needed.

Similar to majority of minor surgical treatment, patients will experience some mild discomfort from the harvesting area, with minimal to no pain at all in their upper eyelid following the transplantation.

Each upper eyelid lash border has about 80 hairs growing along its edge. To achieve the desired fullness, eyelash transplant procedure will usually require about 30 to 40 hair follicles to be grafted. Incisions are made into the edge of the eyelid where lashes normally grow, and the hair grafts are inserted into each site.

Eyebrows typically have 250 – 350 hair follicles with varying contour and shape. Depending on desired shape, size, density and number of existing hair follicle about 150 hairs are transplanted with naturally appearing angle and curvature.

Typically there is no pain at the donor or transplant site. The minor discomfort that may be present is managed through local anesthetics and supplemented tablets.

After 3-4 days, there is a minor crusting or scabbing around the graft sites, which fall off without any need for manual manipulation. During the first 3-5 days the bruising and swelling subsides.

It is normal for the transplanted hair to shed within the first 2-4 weeks after the procedure and leaving the follicle (hair root) intact at the insertion site. Once the new hair growth cycle begins in 3-4 months, a new hair will grow from each follicle. Typically about 1 year is needed for the optimal result.

Complications connected with the surgical procedure are rare: however there are inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure. These include:

  • Infection
  • Scars
  • Excess swelling and/or bruising
  • Loss of 1-4% of the grafted follicles

As it is associated with any surgery, there can rarely be complications such as an infection, which can usually be remedied with antibiotics. Also, there is a chance the new follicles will grow towards the eye into the eyelid – these must be removed in order to prevent corneal or eye injury.
